Who We Are
AfterStarsAfterSchool Programming (ASAS & ASAS4Teens) was developed and opened its doors in 2013 by a team of individuals dedicated to providing safe, purposeful and personal environments for children, teens, and young adults (through age 22 or senior year of high school) with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or autism. The purpose of our environments is growth. ASAS and ASAS4Teens seeks to support and/or achieve academic, cognitive, developmental, behavioral, communicative, social and personal growth for the students enrolled. ASAS is not a daycare, it is a program for growth and development.
ASAS and ASAS4Teens are unique after-school programs in the Knoxville area specifically designed and staffed to accommodate individuals Kindergarten through high school (or age 22). Students are categorized by age and ability level, behavioral needs, the IEP document, parent input, and the director’s discretion. All ASAS programming offers the 1:1 Academy as a placement option for those students needing more significant support. Very often, students in this category have behavioral or physical needs requiring a staff specifically assigned to them.
Is this a faith-based organization?
ASAS and ASAS4Teens is strongly supported by financial giving and facility use from West Park Baptist Church. We feel blessed that the leadership of West Park has seen the value and need for specialized programming for individuals with disabilities and their families.
We are a shared space so faith-based materials are displayed throughout the facility. ASAS and ASAS4Teens does not currently teach Bible classes; however, the program is open and available on Sunday as the STAR Class for faith-based Biblical training at no charge. If you are interested in attending one of our STAR classes on Sunday, please contact HisAbilities.
Who is eligible?
Children, teens, and young adults (age 22 or a senior in high school) with an intellectual or developmental disability and/or autism are eligible for the program. ASAS is currently accepting students enrolled in Kindergarten through 5th grade for the 2016-2017 school year. ASAS4Teens is accepting students 6th grade through 12th grade (or age 22) for the 2016-2017 school year.
Student requirements include some mobility, or a wheelchair/stroller. The student must be free from extreme behaviors such as significant acts of violence toward self or others. We recognize that many individuals with disabilities display behaviors from time to time under a variety of circumstances. All ASAS programming is prepared to deal with mild to moderate behaviors from time to time.
